Jonathan, PDP in dilemma over Obasanjo

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party are confused about what to do with former President Olusegun Obasanjo following agitations by some party members that Obasanjo be expel from the party, reports The Nation.

Obasanjo had lately been critical of President Jonathan and has been endorsing candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the February general elections.

Gombe health workers urged to suspend strike

2015-01-19 14:12
Gombe - The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Gombe State chapter, has called on members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) in the state, to suspend its strike and attend to victims of recent bomb blasts in the state.

Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr. Adamu Danladi made the call while speaking with newsmen in Gombe on Sunday.

He said doctors in the state had been making frantic efforts to attend to victims, but that the work was overwhelming as they were performing the jobs of almost every health worker.

According to him, members of the union have been working overnight, performing surgeries on the victims and other patients at the Specialists Hospital, Gombe.

Danladi refuted a report in one of the National Dailies to the effect that victims of the blasts were not being treated at the hospital because doctors were on strike.

"All the patients in the hospital now are being attended to by the doctors as all other workers in the health sector are on strike.

"We are not happy for the report which said we are on strike because we are the only health workers that are performing our duties.

"Actually we are overwhelmed and we want everybody to come and assist the victims.
"They (victims) are our brothers and sisters, so we should come and assist," he said.

Also commenting on the issue, Consultant Surgeon, Dr Adesina Opoola, said the victims were received and attended to by all doctors up to 2 p.m., but said they needed more hands as the work was overwhelming.
Gombe metropolis recorded two incidents of suicide bombing last week.

Cape Town – The “core member” of the Mandela family, who is at the centre of a forgery claim involving Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has rejected the claim, according to reports.

The Sunday Times reported over the weekend that Madikizela-Mandela faces possible fraud charges after allegedly forging an affidavit that formed part of court papers in her fight to stop a Mandela family meeting from taking place in Qunu in the Eastern Cape.

On Monday Ngcebetshana broke his silence and said the allegations were false. He confirmed to Eyewitness News that he signed the affidavit that was submitted to court.

The affidavit states that because of the meeting tempers are high among the family members and "I do hold a fear that if the meeting is allowed to take place, violence is likely to broke out (sic) and people might fight".
Ngcebetshana told the SABC that the reports are baseless and that no one signed the affidavit on his behalf.
According to the Sunday Times report the affidavit, signed the day before the matter was heard in the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha, was falsified as Ngcebetshana allegedly told Mandla Mandela he never signed it nor did he provide any of the content.

Mandela’s lawyer, Billy Gundelfinger, said at the time that an investigation into the matter will be carried out.He said: "If the allegations are true it would have serious consequences."
