Osun PDP advises Aregbesola to withdraw official vehicles from ex-officials

2015-01-09 18:34
Osogbo - The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun on Friday advised Osun Government to withdraw government vehicles from its former commissioners and other ex-political office holders.

Alhaji Gani OlaOluwa, the party’s Chairman, gave the advice in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo.

OlaOluwa alleged that the state government was promoting illegality as former government officials were still driving in official vehicles.

"It is unfortunate that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government overlooks the excesses of its cronies only to cry foul at others.

"It is unfortunate that the vehicles bought with public funds are still being driven round the state with impunity by former commissioners and special advisers.

"It is laughable for former government officials to continue living in government quarters.
"It is the highest level of indiscipline that former state executive members still parade themselves as government officials,’’ he said.

OlaOluwa said the people of Osun were watching with interest the show of indiscipline in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, on Nov. 27, commenced his second term relieving members of his executives from their respective positions.

Aregbesola, on Monday, Jan. 5, however, announced the re-appointment of Alhaji Moshood Adeoti as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Mr Adegboyega Adeoti as the Chief of Staff (COS).
NAN recalls that the two appointees served in the same capacities in the first term of the governor.

South Africa condems Boko Haram attacks

2015-01-09 17:47
Johannesburg - The South African government on Friday joined the international community in condemning the deadly attacks carried out by Boko Haram on 16 villages in Nigeria.

The department of international relations said the attacks on innocent civilians were a contravention of international human rights and a crime against humanity.

"In this regard, the South African government reiterates its stance that terrorism in any form and from whichever quarter cannot be condoned and South Africa stands firmly with the international community in condemning all forms of terrorism, and these acts in particular," department spokesperson Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

Boko Haram aims to establish an Islamic religious state in northern Nigeria and bordering Cameroon and Chad.

The South African government extended its condolences to the north western African country.
Attacks by Boko Haram have recently intensified with analysts saying this is because of the upcoming presidential elections scheduled to happen next month.

The German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported that officials feared hundreds of people were killed when the villages were set on fire, and said that thousands had fled into the bush.

Abandoned Scottish dog wanted the world over

2015-01-09 17:57
London - Dog lovers from around the world are competing to adopt a mongrel with a serious eye condition abandoned by its owner at a railway station with a suitcase of belongings, an animal welfare charity said on Thursday.

"We've had phone calls from all over - the US, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Canada, Germany - and hundreds and hundreds of emails," Scottish SPCA spokesperson Amanda Smith said.
"It's just gone crazy since we put Kai on the website."

The shar-pei crossbreed was left tied to a railing at Ayr station along with a suitcase that contained a pillow, blanket, toys, food and a bowl.

Three-year-old Kai needs surgery for entropions, inward-growing eyelids, but is otherwise healthy.
The SPCA is drawing up a shortlist of prospective owners but will insist that they come to Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city, for an interview.

"We'd need to do a home check," Smith said. "People would need to come and meet him first before we'd even consider them."

That would mean big airfares for some of the prospective owners and turn Kai into a very expensive pet.

Britain braces for attacks

2015-01-09 17:59
London - The jobs of 25 armed police officers in the northern English city of Manchester were on Friday declared safe from cost-cutting measures as Britain braces for possible terrorist attacks which the chief of the intelligence agency MI5 chief warned were unstoppable.

A decision was made to retain the posts "taking into account the threats and risks of policing an area as diverse as Greater Manchester," the police said.

Greater Manchester Police chief Sir Peter Fahy told the BBC: "In the past, it was just about big plots coming in from the outside. Now we're just as concerned about individuals in this country being rapidly brainwashed on the internet and suddenly deciding to perform some chaotic attack."

MI5 chief Andrew Parker said that police and the spy agency he leads had "stopped three UK terrorist plots" in recent months.

Parker warned that "we can't hope to stop everything" but stressed that Britain had "faced down" terrorism for more than 40 years.

"The going is getting tougher but there are good reasons for confidence in our enduring ability to respond," he said.

MI5's latest estimate is that 600 Britons had left for Syria to join Islamic State militants.
Parliamentarian Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who chairs the Intelligence and Security Committee, urged legislation to bolster the powers of the intelligence services to intercept communications "particularly international communications that might be relevant."

Chancellor George Osborne said extra money had gone into monitoring "these self-starting terrorists who get their ideas off the internet and then want to perpetrate horrendous crimes."

He added: "We'll put the resources in, whatever the security services need they will get because they do a heroic job on our behalf."
