Abuja - The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations has urged
petroleum price regulating agencies to enforce the new pump price of N87
per litre of Premium Motor Spirit.
The Federal Government, on January 18, announced a reduction in the price of petrol from N97 to N87 per litre.
The
organisations, led by Tosin Adeyanju, who is also the Executive
Director of Conscience Nigeria, made the call at a rally organised by
the organisation on Wednesday in Abuja.
He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for reducing the pump price to N87 per litre.
He said the decision was a show of love to Nigerians at the time of need.
He added that since 1999, this is the first time that the price of fuel will be reduced with N10 difference.
He expressed hope that the President in
subsequent months would further reduce the price in line with global
market when the need arose.
"It is also to let the president know
that civil society organisations in Nigeria support him in the
forthcoming election,’’ Adeyanju said.
He advised politicians not to make the February elections a do-or-die affair but to see politics as service to the people.
"If you see politics as service to people, losing an election will be taken in good faith,’’ he said.
He urged Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used by politicians as tools for violence in the elections.
Julie Egele, a member of the group, urged Nigerians to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in the election.
Egele said Jonathan had performed well to deserve a second term.
She
said one of such achievements was the making of the Abuja-Lokoja road
as a dual carriageway, which she described as horrible before the
construction by the Jonathan administration.
