Umuahia - The member representing Isiala Ngwa North, Martins Azubuike, had been elected as Abia House of Assembly Speaker.

Azubuike, a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) had been in the House since 2007.
He was elected unopposed after his nomination by Tony Nwubani, seconded by Emeka Alozie.

He said "I shall work with commitment, kindness and always apply the best global practice in dealing with my colleagues, the executive arm and to everyone.

"We shall work together to build a legislature that will justify the trust and confidence reposed in us. Do not forget, we were elected at a time when the stakes were high.

"To this end, we shall enact and review laws that will bring progress to our people and we shall repeal any obsolete laws that encourage the present infrastructure deficit.

"We shall revive our dead public enterprises, give impetus to the private sector to drive our economy, provide meaningful and affordable health care to the people.

"We shall also employ the machinery of oversight and other legislative interventions to ensure that Abia people get value for public money spent."

He speaker said the Abia Assembly, under his watch, would play the role of a stabilising force by cooperating with other arms of government without compromising the rules of separation of power.

He, therefore, thanked the state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, "for not interfering in the election of the 6th Assembly’s leadership."

The Abia State House of Assembly has 24 members, with 13 from PDP and 11 from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

“Enugu tampered with property seized from ex-Governor”

Okoro Chinedu 09:21 12/06/2015
Lagos - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alleged the Enugu State Government tampered with the assets of companies associated with the former governor of the state, Chimaroke Nnmani.
A complaint has been issued to the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

The companies in question are Rainbownet Nigeria Limited, Cosmos FM, Capital City Automobile Nigeria Limited and Renaissance University Teaching Hospital.

The companies, which had last month pleaded guilty to a ten-count amended charge EFCC brought against them, are alleged to have failed to comply with lawful inquiry made by the commission.

Their assets are central to the review of facts of the four companies linked to the ex-governor which was fixed for Thursday.

Counsel to the EFCC, Kelvin Uzozie, told the court that he was still working to get a schedule of all the assets and properties of the companies.

He told the court that in the course of preparing the schedule it was discovered that some of the assets and properties had been taken over or tampered with by the immediate past government of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime.

“We discovered that most of the properties have been allocated to their friends, family members or political office holders. We are interested in getting all the assets as there was an interim forfeiture order by the court on the assets and properties. We believe it is not right for anybody no matter how highly placed the person may be to tamper with properties that are before the court. We want the properties to be harmonized,” said Uzozie.

Nnamani, who was governor for eight years until 2007, was first arraigned before Justice Tijani Abubakar in 2007.

The ex-governor was docked alongside Sunday Anyaogu, his then aide, and some firms linked to them are alleged to have conspired with other accused persons to launder funds from the state treasury, especially monies meant for the local government areas of Enugu state.

Justice Mohammed Yinusa has adjourned the case against the companies to July 7.

NEMA resumes distribution of relief to Borno IDPs

Augustine Osayande 08:37 12/06/2015
Abuja - The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed drugs and other medical requirements to numerous camps housing people displaced by the Boko Harm insurgency in the Borno State.
The camps, 22 in total, are in Maidugiri, the capital city of the terror-riddled state situated in the northeast.
Information officer of the agency in the region, Mallam AbdulKadir Ibrahim, confirmed the distribution of the health material.

He said Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, was at Yerwa IDPs camp on Thursday to perform the handover ceremony for the drugs to the camp clinic.

Ibrahim said the agency was collaborating with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA) and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the internally-displaced persons (IDPs) had all the basics they required at all times.

“The agency recently conducted a need assessment for the areas liberated by the military with a view of rehabilitating the communities before the return of the displaced persons back to their communities,” added Ibrahim.

The distribution of the material comes a few days after the agency entered into with the Borno State government, on behalf of the Federal Government, to share most of the responsibilities of providing required goods and amenities at the IDPs camps and also be involved in the management of camps.

Borno is the state worst hit by the insurgency the Islamic militant has been waging over the years in the country. More than 13 000 people have been killed and an estimated 2 million displaced.

Rep. Gbajabiamila pledges loyalty to Speaker Dogara

08:37 12/06/2015
Abuja - The Former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Representative Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday promised to work with the new Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, to deliver on campaign promises.
Gbajabiamila said this while addressing newsmen in Abuja after an emergency meeting by the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It would be recalled that Gbajabiamila won the straw poll the APC organised to present a unified candidate for the speakership position but was defeated by Dogara who insisted on a contest.

According to him, the loyalty will remain strong as long as party programmes are pursued to ignite the needed change.

"We will work with the leadership of the house and with the speaker for as long as the party's programmes are properly articulated and pursued on the floor of the house.

"He is an APC member but not the speaker of the APC but of the House of Representatives of the country. So we will work with him and support him," he said.

According to him, the party is going to remain strong and united so that we can deliver the deliverables and the programme of the party through the house.

On whether the party would sanction some of the lawmakers that defied its instruction in both the senate and the house, he said: "all I know is that in every association there must be discipline".

"Whatever the party decides to do that's for the party; it's not for me to speak about it," he said.
In another interview, Rep Mohammed Monguno, who won the straw poll organised by the party for Deputy Speaker, said the situation in the lower chamber was a reality the party must rise to face.
"As it is now, that is the reality on the ground and we have to deal with it.

"As loyal party members, we will not take any step that is going to affect the interest, peace, order and good governance of this country.

"The emergence of the leadership of the National Assembly is a reality on ground as far as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is concerned," he said.

Monguno said the party had summoned them and urged them to continue to support the government so that the people would enjoy dividends of democracy.

He said: "They summoned us to support the government so that the lofty aims and objectives for which the Nigerian people supported the APC to form government is achieved to the fullest''.

Mohammadu Buhari might not change Nigeria – Obasanjo

18:34 11/06/2015
Former Nigerian president, Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo has claimed that the President-elect Buhari might not change Nigeria in the coming years.

In a meeting with the South-West women leaders in Abeokuta, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo made it known that the president-elect Muhammadu Buhari might not be able to change Nigeria in the near future because the damages the present government have caused is not something that can be amended in just four years.
Nigeria is currently in a state of havoc with problems like the fuel scarcity, terrorism, low power generation amongst others so with all these, I don’t think the president-elect will be able to change this great nation overnight. Obasanjo urged Nigerians that the new government of Buhari will be inheriting a very bad government with other debts attached to it, and for people to smile again, they will have to endure a bit because it takes identifying the wrong turn to know the right one.

The leader of the women society, Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Lawson Alaba asked the former Nigerian president the favour of not letting the President-elect out of sight when he assumes power in May29. We know that the president-elect has military experience but we want you (Obasanjo) to be of a great help to him in moving this nation to where we want to be. Nigeria is not a country to be shaken by some sects that call themselves boko haram.

It gives us a lot of concern hearing daily that our sisters and daughters are suffering continuously in the hands of this terrorists up- north without our government having anything to do about it. We The South-West women leaders believe that it takes great leadership to take a great nation to greater heights. Obasanjo claimed that he has great faith in the President-elect Mohammadu Buhari and believes he (Buhari) will take the nation Nigeria to that expected height and also put a smile on the peoples face again.
