US to deploy 400 troops to train Syrian rebels

Washington - The US military is planning to deploy more than 400 troops to help train Syrian rebels to fight ISIS, along with hundreds of US support personnel, a Pentagon spokesperson told Reuters on Thursday.
The US military has not yet identified where it will draw its forces from for the training mission, expected to begin in the spring at sites outside Syria, colonel Steve Warren said. Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have offered to host the training.

Warren did not offer additional details on the troop figures, first reported by Defence One website.
The training programme is a part of President Barack Obama's multi-year plan to field local forces in Syria to halt and eventually roll back ISIS fighters, while pounding them with US-led airstrikes.

The Pentagon has estimated that it can train more than 5 000 recruits in the first year and that up to 15 000 will be needed to retake areas of eastern Syria controlled by ISIS.

Critics in Congress have said the Pentagon program won't aid Syrian opposition forces fast enough, however, and question whether it is too small to influence the course of Syria's multi-pronged civil war between President Bashar Assad and his opponents.

Across the border in Iraq, Obama has authorized more than 3 000 US troops to advise and train Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

The disclosure of the planned troop deployments for the Syria training mission came just days after senior US officials met Syrian opposition and civil society leaders in Istanbul to discuss the programme.
US major general Michael Nagata, combined joint interagency task force - Syria Director, and US special envoy for Syria Daniel Rubinstein led the meeting on the US side.

"These introductory meetings were an important step as we prepare to launch the train-and-equip program later this spring with our international partners," said Pentagon spokesperson commander Elissa Smith.

Zimbabwe continues on deflation slide

2015-01-16 08:28
Harare - Zimbabwe continued on a fresh slide into deflation in December as prices fell due to tight liquidity, figures from the government statistics agency on Thursday showed.

Prices decreased by an average of 0.80% between December last year and the same month in 2013.
"The year on year inflation rate for the month of December 2014 as measured by the all items Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at -0.80 percent," the Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency said in a statement.
That is down marginally from -0.78% in November.

Zimbabwe's economy has been on a downturn for over a decade characterised by high inflation, unemployment and deteriorating living standards.

It slid into deflation in February, staying negative for five months in succession as prices fell due to a cash crunch which saw fewer buyers for goods and services.

Prices recovered marginally going in the positive from July only to fall back into deflation in November.
Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa has lowered the growth forecast for this year from 4.1% to 3.2%.
The government, saddled with a huge debt, has been battling to pay its workers and resorted to staggering dates to pay bonuses.

Yemen's al-Qaeda claims attack on Charlie Hebdo

2015-01-14 12:37
Dubai - Al-Qaeda in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the attack on Charlie Hebdo in a video posted online, saying it was "vengeance" for the French weekly's cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

"We, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, claim responsibility for this operation as vengeance for the messenger of Allah," one of the group's leaders, Nasser al-Ansi, said in the video titled: "A message regarding the blessed battle of Paris."

AQAP was formed in January 2009 as a merger of the Yemeni and Saudi branches of al-Qaeda. Washington regards it as the worldwide jihadist network's most dangerous branch and has carried out a sustained drone war against its leaders.

Ansi said the attack was ordered by Ayman Zawahiri, the network's global commander.
"The leadership of [AQAP] was the party that chose the target and plotted and financed the plan... It was following orders by our general chief Ayman al-Zawahiri," he said.

"The heroes were chosen and they answered the call," he said.

Speaking over footage of the attack that killed 12 people, Ansi said: "Today, the mujahideen avenge their revered prophet, and send the clearest message to everyone who would dare to attack Islamic sanctities."

Man finds himself all alone on a plane... well, almost

2015-01-14 13:22
Cape Town - A lack of legroom, armrest wars, and the dreaded middle seat! We've all wished to have an entire row of plane seats to ourselves.

But an entire airplane?

Well, that's almost a bit creepy.

Yet, this is exactly what happened to Chris O'Leary from Brooklyn, after hours of delays, he suddenly found himself all alone on his Delta flight from Cleveland, Ohio to La Guardia Airport in New York.

CNN reports that his fellow passengers had all seemingly been booked on other flights, leaving him as the sole and only passenger for the original one.

He posted about the absurd situation on Twitter:

Iran condemns new Charlie Hebdo issue as 'provocative'

2015-01-14 12:46
Tehran — Iran has condemned Charlie Hebdo's new issue as "provocative" and says the new cartoon by the weekly is an insult to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham says that Wednesday's publication of the paper featuring another caricature of the prophet "provokes the sentiments of Muslims the world over."

Iran has strongly condemned the deadly assault by two masked gunmen that killed 12 people last week, including much of the weekly's editorial staff and two police officers. Those who survived published an issue with a print run of 3 million — more than 50 times the usual circulation.

Afkham says last week's attack against the French satirical weekly was against Islam's teaching. But, she says, the latest cartoon is also insulting to the religion.
