Yenogoa - The Bayelsa State Elections Petition Tribunal on
Wednesday commenced a per-trial hearing into the petition filed by a
former Bayelsa State governor and the candidate of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) Timipre Sylva against the election of Ben Murray-Bruce as
Senator for the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, reports Thisday.
Sylva
had approached the tribunal asking it to declare Murray-Bruce
unqualified to contest the March 28 National Assembly election.
The
former governor is hinging his argument on the Senator’s alleged dual
citizenship and refusal to relinquish such before the election.
He
is also asking the tribunal to disqualify Murray-Bruce due to the
irregularities and manipulations allegedly carried out by the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) and its agents during the election in Brass and
other parts of the district.
He is urging the tribunal to uphold his candidature and declare him the valid winner of the election.

NLC vows to resist removal of fuel subsidy
17:30 11/06/2015
Abuja - The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reinstated its resolve to oppose any attempt by the Federal Government to remove subsidy on petroleum products, Nation reports.
The Acting President, Comrade Kiri Mohammed, NLC said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration must take charge of the situation and declare a state of emergency in the sector.
The congress lamented that in a nation that produces crude oil, scarcity of the petroleum products has been allowed to linger for four months, while those accused of mismanaging subsidy on petroleum products are still walking the streets free without facing prosecution.

Prisons clerk has fraud case to answer
Okoro Chinedu
17:30 11/06/2015
Lagos - Imaobong Akon Esu-Nte, the Nigeria Prisons Service Accountant, has failed in her bid to have a myriad of charges bordering on fraud against her dropped by the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja.
Justice Chukwu has dismissed the application seeking to quash the 11- count charge of money laundering, conspiracy, forgery and abuse of office.
Esu-Ente’s legal team argued the court did not disclose a prima facie case against her.
Her team said Esu-Nte, was also standing trial on a similar charge before another court and added that the charge before Justice Chukwu amounted to an abuse of court process.
Justice Chukwu held that the court retains jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter and ordered the continuation of the trial.
The case has subsequently been adjourned to July 9 for further hearing.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission seeks the prosecution of Etsu-Nte alongside one Olukolade Olabamiji, a businessman and Mohammed Abdulkadir, a banker, for allegedly laundering funds from the Nigeria Prisons Service into the accounts of companies where she has interests.
During the trial, which began in March, the court has heard how the Abuja socialite, Esu-Nte, used her position as Prison Accountant, in connivance with other suspects, to launder money from the accounts of the Nigeria Prisons Service to their companies named as Royal Mall Nigeria Limited, Transferase Ventures and I.D Integrated Petroleum on the guise of executing non-existent contracts.

Lawan’s Group Threatens Legal Action Against Saraki’s Election
He said his group would, very soon, challenge the alleged illegality in
court, “since it takes two-third of members to impeach the Senate
president, two third of the members should also have been in attendance
before he was elected on Tuesday.”
Members of the Senate Unity Forum, on Wednesday threatened to take a legal action against the election of Senator Bukola Saraki, which, according to them, did not follow due constitutional procedure.
The leader of the group, Senator Barnabas Gemade, stated this while addressing journalists at the National Assembly Complex, after he led members of the group to stage a walkout in the chambers.
Gemade said 51 senators were not allowed to take part in the election of the Senate president because they were waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari, who invited them to a meeting at the International Conference Centre.
He said his group would, very soon, challenge the alleged illegality in court, “since it takes two-third of members to impeach the Senate president, two third of the members should also have been in attendance before he was elected on Tuesday.”
He said, “Our right to participate in the election of the Senate president is a constitutional right which cannot be taken away by any person or group of persons.
“The Clerk of the National Assembly knowing full well that the quorum for election of the Senate president has not been met, went ahead to conduct an election that shuts the door on about 51 other senators which would remain unacceptable until what would meet democratic parameters was done.”
But members of the Like Minds Senators, at another news conference addressed by Senator Dino Melaye, in company with four others, maintained that due process was followed in the election of Saraki as Senate president.
Melaye also dared the SUF members to challenge the action in court even as he expressed full confidence that the case lacked necessary merit.
