You’re running a confused government – Okogie blasts Buhari

You’re running a confused government – Okogie blasts Buhari

Arch Bishop Olubunmi Okogie

Archbishop Emeritus, Catholic Archdiocese Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of lopsided corruption war and acting contemptuously towards the judiciary while millions of Nigerians were left to face unimaginable social problems.

In a statement released by the Director of Social Communications of the Diocese, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, Okogie asked Buhari to urgently retool, refocus and aggressively lead by example on all fronts or risk plunging Nigeria into state of despondency.

He said that Buhari must also aggressively face the fiscal and monetary problems we have head on, without letting the anti corruption drive look like a political distraction.

Okojie who is dissatisfied with Buhari’s style of governance said:
“A snail paced and disordered methodology in governance, his apparent disdain for judicial authority and decisions, a lost today found tomorrow 2016 budget debacle, and a rather rudderless and confused Central Bank with an unclear monetary policy strategy (inevitably increasing the economic uncertainties being faced by Nigerians), have set alarm bells ringing in my mind and in the minds of many discerning Nigerians.

“Indeed, his perceived discordant relationship with the leadership of the Legislature has many naysayers chuckling and remarking that President Buhari’s government is heading rather naturally, into his comfort zone – a one man show.”
Okogie also noted that a lot of Nigerians are beginning to feel that Buhari is fast transforming this nation into a police state where Mr. President, the EFCC and DSS rule the day.
“What they say is given lurid headlines in the media, and it seems to all that some of the defendants/accused persons are being tried in the press with information conveniently slipping into the hands of the press, presumably from the security agencies, even before such people have been charged to court.”
He also frowned on the President’s refusal to heed court pronouncements regarding the bail granted to the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki.
“The Pro-Biafran activist, Nnmadi Kanu and the erstwhile NSA Sambo Dasuki were granted bail by the courts but such bails were disregarded by the security agents under Buhari’s watch.
“Unfortunately, democracy is difficult and this government must realise that democracy pervasively coloured with impunity, arbitrariness and high handedness, cannot be used to fight and correct the financial impunity and reckless abandon of the previous administration, even if it is more difficult to do so, the rule of law must be obeyed and be the order of the day.”

Buhari is not Nigeria’s messiah, declares Bishop Kwakpovwe

PUBLISHER of the daily devotional booklet, Our Daily Manna, ODM, Bishop Chris Kwakpovwe has cautioned Nigerians especially those who believe that President Muhammadu Buhari is Nigeria’s messiah, pointing out that God’s promised messiah is yet to come.
The cleric noted that Buhari is the forerunner of the messiah who will bring some changes if only he maintained his integrity and do the right things, just as he condemned recent agitations for a sovereign state of Biafra, saying “Biafra is like thick cloud without water or rain.”

Buhari
The bishop, who is also the General Overseer of Manna Prayer Mountain, made these declarations at an interview session ahead of his ministry’s annual world anointing service scheduled for next Friday at the Tafawa Balewa Square TBS, Lagos. The theme of this year’s programme is: “Jehovah Ebenezer – Lord wipe my tears”.

“President Buhari is not the messiah; he is only preparing the way for the messiah who will eventually emerge. Buhari is like the John the Baptist. As a politician, Buhari will bring about some changes if he maintain his integrity and genuinely probe those he ought to probe,” he stated.

According to the bishop, there are certain persons who assisted the president to get to power who he would not be able to probe even when he knows that they are not innocent.

“The messiah who will genuinely transform our country will emerge. Buhari is not the messiah but we should be hopeful that one day, we will sing a new song,” he stated.

Pledging his unwavering believe in the unity of Nigeria, the cleric argued that the peace the country has enjoyed since after the Nigerian Civil War should not be broken by digging up residues of hate for the selfish interest of certain individuals seeking to balkanize the nation.

He therefore enjoined all the pro-Biafra protesters to tread with caution, sheathe their swords and dialogue with constituted authorities on issues that would bring about unity, peace and progress of the country.

In his words: “There is nothing like Biafra. Biafra is like thick cloud without water or rain. There will be no civil war, our brothers in the South East will enjoy President Muhammadu Buhari. They should just allow peace to reign. Whatever challenges, disagreements that may have re-surfaced, are not beyond our collective ability to resolve.”

On the world anointing night, Bishop Kwakpovwe said the annual programme has attracted millions since its inception 11 years ago, adding that this year’s edition will mark the end of a 21-day fasting and prayer, which began on January 9.

He said: “It is a night of 12 mantles and there will be series of testimonies, instant healing from God because God is going to visit His people. God has promised to wipe all tears and He asked me to tell the people to bring 12 mantles and these mantles are prophetic in nature.”

B/Haram: Defence Minister, CAS go arms-shopping in Moscow
Efforts to consolidate on the ongoing war against terrorism got a boost as the Defence Minister, Air Marshal Monsur Dan-Ali and Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar, yesterday night departed for Russia to purchase vital military hardware needed to sustain the tempo of aggression against the terrorists.
Competent sources in the Department of State Service (DSS) disclosed to our reporters that the duo left for Moscow to inspect the war planes ordered by Nigeria in order to give the Boko Haram elements a final push and ensure they never harassed any community once such an area is cleared.

Specifically, the top brass officials left Abuja to purchase two Mi-35 Attack Helicopters and 10 Mushak Super Trainers from Russia.

According to the source, which pleaded for anonymity, “this is towards the commencement of re-equipping of the Nigerian military. This time, government wants to ensure that Boko Haram insurgents never return to any community once they are flushed out.

“The military will utilise these war planes to carry out reconnaissance missions and rescue operations and also provide needed aerial support to our troops. What happened in the last dispensation is gradually being surmounted.

“Because of the current successes recorded against Boko Haram, they have not just been degraded but the morale of the officers and men fighting in the war theatre is very high”.

Nigeria suffered severe international military blockade since the insurgents began their debilitating activities leading to the take-over of more than 12 local government areas in the North-East geo-political zone.
Also, efforts made by the military authorities during the President Goodluck Jonathan administration to purchase needed ammunition were frustrated, leading to sourcing of arms from the black market and the consequent embarrassment to the country.

The sovereignty of Biafra is non – negotiable – Dr Nwoko

The sovereignty of Biafra is non – negotiable – Dr Nwoko

Dr Ibe Nwoko, a medical doctor and the Executive Director of Centre for the Defence of Rights of Indigenous People and Culture, is a supporter of the Biafra movement. In this chat with ANGELA NKWO-AKPOLU, he speaks on the Biafra struggle and sundry issues. Excerpts:

How would you react to some of the comments made during the recent Presidential Media Chat by President Muhamadu Buhari?
President Muhamadu Buhari was asking Igbos what they want after appointing some Igbos into his cabinet, I want to categorically emphasize that with due respect to him, he is missing the point and he’s not reading the handwriting on the wall. If millions of Igbo youths are calling for a separate nation of their own with tacit support from thousands and millions of non-Igbo speaking people, and President Buhari is still asking Igbos what they want, then it means there is a problem in his understanding of events and times.

For a people to decide to have a separate nation of theirs, it means that the milton’s law of motion is very much into play. It means that the union or marriage called Nigeria is unworkable and rather than ask Igbos what they want, I will advise him and Nigerians generally to find a way of dissolving this unworkable marriage peacefully, instead of creating anarchy where there should be none. People like Buhari are implicitly creating enmity among the diverse ethnic groups, who were forcefully joined together in this marriage and who have over the years suffered the inhuman conditions associated with such unworkable existence like Nigeria. However, the different components of Nigeria can still cooperate where they find fit when Biafra exists as a separate sovereign nation.

Recently, former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphatically stated or pontificated that Biafra is dead. I wish to call his attention that it was during his tenure as a civilian President that Biafra House was established in Washington DC. He is very much aware that Biafra government in exile was also proclaimed in 2007 after the establishment of the Biafra charter. Thus, it will be foolhardy on his part to claim that a project that has a government in exile representing it is a failure or dead. Biafra was recognized by some nations and those nations have not denied that recognition till date. Therefore, the idea of a dead Biafra is a figment of his own imagination.

I want to state that those who can proclaim that the Biafra cause is dead is the Biafra Provisional Government and Biafrans in general, whose duty it is to work for the re-establishment of Biafra sovereignty.

What is your take on the comments credited to Revd Fr. Ejike Mbaka and Archbishop Chukwuma, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese on the Biafran agitation?
With due respect to both of them, I wish to advise them that they should limit their voice and verbal expressions to winning souls for God and not to dabble into dirty Nigerian politics. But trying to use a platform like Biafra to gain popularity in a disparaging manner shows that there is some level of immaturity in their political understanding.

What do you think of the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu despite meeting bail conditions?
I want to state that the young man called Nnamdi Kanu, who is the Director of Radio Biafra London should be left alone, because he was only speaking the obvious. He never carried a gun or formed an army, didn’t destroy any public property; rather he was only trying to ginger Biafrans to continue the struggle for Biafra, using technological means. I remember that during the 2015 presidential election, the current President Buhari formed an unregistered broadcasting outfit through which his propaganda campaign of change was aired to millions of people. His action of running a rogue broadcasting house was supposed to be treason, because he incited the people against the then ruling government. So is it now a case of the pot calling the kettle black. My position is that Kanu should be left alone. Is he running away to become a problem to Nigeria or live peacefully somewhere. What is the fear of the Nigerian government over Kanu. See, the world is a global village and no matter where he runs to, he can easily be traced.

What is your position on the different factions of Biafra?
Don’t worry over that because the struggle has gone beyond factions or groups.
What is your take on the death of some people during protests by Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB?
I will advise that the unnecessary killings of Igbos during protests should be stopped both by those protesting and security operatives. Those protesting should organize themselves well to avoid being a public nuisance while those doing the killing should remember that someday they will be called upon to give account of their actions someday.

What are the demands on Biafra?
The government of Nigeria should stop creating unnecessary enmity among the people when there should be none. It is very obvious to everyone that this country is unworkable. Therefore, they should find peaceful ways and means by which dismemberment of this country can be done and those who want to continue as Nigerians can continue while those who want to go can go and live as sovereign nation.

Let me advise the people in the geographical area called Biafra to organize themselves to make the struggle easier to accomplish. The struggle is not about arms struggle or brandishing of sophisticated weapons. It is about asking for that which is their right of heritage. See, referendums will be organized so that the people will have the opportunity to express their views and beliefs concerning the Biafra project. On the referendum, the United Nations will be part and parcel of this organization. It will be genuine and will be seen as a genuine referendum. Therefore people should jettison fears and question of whether Biafra will be or not as the nation has come to stay.

How do you view the recent alleged sack of 4000 workers drawn from 19 parastatals in Imo State?
It is unworkable. Whatever reasons Governor Rochas Okorocha has is best known to him. Civil Service is not a farm where you plant and cultivate. Rather, it makes the society to be in motion, and for there to be stability. Most of these benefits are not visible but they are felt. By the way, where did he get money for the Imo carnival and other wasteful expenses he incurred if there is no money? The Civil Service rule must be followed to the later to lay off workers, not a radio announcement. I call on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), to look into the matter and ensure that Okorocha does not become an Emperor in the society.

Four People That Could Tear Nigeria Apart in 2016 (Must Read)

Four People That Could Tear Nigeria Apart in 2016 (Must Read)Buhari-saraki2

By: Ken Joshua

Nigeria is at a crucial point in her history as the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari battles head-long the hydra-headed monster called corruption to restore sanity to her finances in these trying times of the country’s economic life when oil, the main revenue source,  has practically lost all its value.

But there are four people that could send all efforts down the drain this year through their controversial activities in parts of the country. These people are, in their different ways, contributing to the undermining of the unity of the country through their various actions in different regions of the country. They are battling for the soul of Nigeria with the central government at the expense of millions of citizens who just want an opportunity to live their lives peacefully.

Nnamdi Kanu
Of all the people on this list, leading member of the group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and founder of Biafra Radio in London, Nnamdi Kanu is probably the most influential at the moment. Kanu, who is already in the court for treason under the watchful eyes of the Department of State Security (DSS), currently holds sway in practically all of the South East region and has numerous followers abroad.

The political activist is on this list of the dangerous ones to Nigeria’s unity because he is trying to reenact the series of events that led to the Civil War of 1967 to 1970 that nearly tore Nigeria apart.
Kanu is calling for the people of the South East to mobilize and fight for the creation of the state of Biafra. Kanu argues that the Igbos are not properly catered for by the federal government.

To achieve this, he joined IPOB and founded the highly controversial Biafra Radio at his London base, from where he broadcasted messages which the government says are inciting and treasonous to all parts of the South Eastern region and some parts of the South South. He was arrested in 2015 while on one of his brief trips to Nigeria. He has since remained in DSS custody while being arraigned in court.

In spite of being in jail, Kanu has continued to influence the continuous call for the state of Biafra and currently, not a single week goes by in the South East without a protest march in support of Kanu’s claim. While at the moment the protesters have been peaceful and recorded cases of deaths occurred only when security forces attacked them, the agitation clearly is on the rise in the South East as Nigerian leaders wonder what to do, and anything could worsen the situation.

Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky
Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky is another individual with his finger practically on the trigger. El-Zakzaky was the one who introduced the Shia Muslim practice into the country from Iran over 30 years ago. Before then, Nigeria had only Sunni Muslims.

The Sheik controls a chunk of the Muslim population in the north and is so influential that his religious procession or convoy has right of way above anyone. He could not even be controlled by law enforcement agencies. Residents of Kaduna State where El-Zakzaky has his abode told stories of an oppressive theocracy imposed on them by the religious leader.

“Every resident of Zaria is affected directly or indirectly by the self-acclaimed powers and disregard for traffic rules by the Shi’ite members in Zaria, especially when it comes to the use of public roads. These Shi’ite members consider any other person as a second class citizen who has no rights and privileges.
“These boys traumatised and brutally dealt with anybody while El-Zakzaky was on transit. Complaints to police at different times did not yield any result. I am from Gyallesu area, before now we lived just like prisoners who have no right to live a life worthy of human living.

“When El-Zakzaky was in Gyallesu, the area became a home to all kinds of criminals because his boys did not allow uniform personnel into the area, no matter the level of crime committed. These boys used to search anybody that is coming into the area irrespective of his or her status.

“Again, once they lock up the gates at night you have no right to go out for whatever reason. The kind of loyalty these boys accorded El-Zakzaky was second to none.

“They see him as a messiah. They neither have respect for constitution nor any constituted authority. His instruction is the final,” coordinator of Peace Initiative Forum, Mu’izzu Daruddeen revealed in a statement.
Although at the moment, El-Zakzaky’s whereabouts are unknown after he was bundled away by military men following a recent face-off between Shiite Muslim members and men of the Nigerian Army which left hundreds dead, his followers wait for his return patiently.

With no fewer than five of his sons allegedly killed in clashes between the sect and the Army in the last three years and him (El-Zakzaky) still missing, it is quite worrisome just to imagine what this situation could degenerate into in the light of how insurgent group, Boko Haram became violent after the extra judicial killing of their leader, Mohammed Yusuf.

The fact that the Sheik has a direct link to Iran which is notorious for sponsoring proxy wars and terrorist organizations on foreign soil does not help matters.

Tompolo (Government Ekpemupolo)
A quick search of this code name on the internet reveals that the occupation of Government Ekpemupolo (as he was born) is guerilla fighter and it is doubtful if there is any informed Nigerian who does not know Tompolo, the Niger Delta militant who once ruled the days (and nights) of the South South region.
Before the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, the name ‘Tompolo’ drove fear into the hearts of many as he and his cohorts terrorized the creeks of the South-South region, blowing up oil pipelines daily and creating a thriving oil bunkering business from the ‘loot’ at the expense of millions of Nigerians. The amnesty programme, which was orchestrated by immediate past president Goodluck Jonathan when he was a vice president and signed by the late president, Umar Musa Yar’Adua, made Tompolo a very rich militant.
Through the programme, Tompolo and his ilk got mouth-watering contracts from the government of Yar’Adua and then Jonathan that ran into billions of naira. However, recent investigations by the Buhari administration alleged that the contracts were ill-gotten gains that have run the country’s treasury dry. But Tompolo has refused to see the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or show up in court, thereby forcing the presiding judge on is case at a Federal High Court in Lagos, Justice Ibrahim Buba to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

Crying ‘witch-hunt’, Tompolo has threatened war with the Federal Government and vowed not to obey the court. He has already barricaded himself in at the creeks and has allegedly begun blowing up pipelines again to bring the government to its knees. Armed with more money than ever to procure even more weapons than before, Tompolo could pose a real danger to Nigeria quickly should the situation deteriorate any further in the South South.

With oil now selling at around $27 per barrel and the naira exchanging for over 300 to the dollar, the last thing Nigerians need is for things to get out of hand again in that region.

President Muhammadu Buhari
Also making the list is none other than Nigeria’s number one citizen, President Muhammadu Buhari. He is on this list only by virtue of the fact that he is the leader of the country and his actions or inactions could push Nigeria over the brink or save it from the impending disaster these people earlier mentioned pose to our unity.

The president’s manner of handling these people could go a long way to determine if the situation would be escalated into a national catastrophe or doused, buried and forgotten.
Sincerely, the president is in the unenviable position of balancing the tripartite of dispensing of justice, obeying the rule of law and managing the expectations of the international community to which these controversial figures have heavy links.

What this means is that while the president is trying to keep Nigeria one (a task that must be done), he has to ensure that the rights of these men are protected while also figuring out a way to take the wind out the sail of their agitations which could get violent within the twinkle of an eye. And he must do all these to the satisfaction of the international community, some of whom have relationships with this men and are already biased in their views.

For instance, Nnamdi Kanu is both Nigerian and British and the UK has already expressed reservations over his detention. (Remember that his Radio Biafra is based in London). El-Zakzaky has Iran’s backing because he preaches their type of religion, Shia Islam. (Iran has already warned the president to be careful on the issue of the Sheik). Tompolo has links abroad through which he buys his weapons, the kinds that only sovereign governments know how to get. And the president has to handle them all, and perfectly too.
With how big some of these agitations are getting, the bubble could bust soon and the president will be at the centre of it all – a very unenviable position.
