Nnamdi Kanu not ill, bubbling in detention – Lawyer

Lawyer to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Vincent Obetta, has revealed that the embattled leader is not ill and has not been tortured while in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.
This is contrary to reports in the media, claiming that his health status was deteriorating.

Obetta, in a statement said Kanu who also doubles as the Director of Radio Biafra is in high spirit not minding the fact that he is in custody.
He said, “I would like to say that as a solicitor and advocate of the federal republic of Nigeria, I have sworn to an oath, to defend the defenceless and above all, to say the truth and be fair to all, at all material times,”
“Having said that, I must add that I have been inundated with calls and I also read in several mediums, all manner of ruse about my client; that he has been tortured by the DSS, transferred to a more deadly cell, and also that he has been critically ill.
“I am still wondering where such information came from. I can authoritatively say that apart from the British government‘s team that visited him (Nnamdi kanu) last year, I am, and have been the only one who has been privileged to have access (though limited) to him and all through my visits, there has not been any overt or covert situation pointing to a case of torture on him by the authority of the DSS. He is neither sick nor have fallen sick since his incarceration on the 14th October, 2015.
“During my last visit, 14th January, 2016, we had robust and cheerful discussions even with his captors. He was also in good health, full of life and in high spirits contrary to the media reportage that he is being tortured, has been sick and broken.
“The media should do more in the area of investigative journalism before going to the tabloid.”
The lawyer to leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Vincent Obetta has said contrary to reports the embattled leader is not ill and has not been tortured while in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

SEE WHY TOMPOLO REFUSED TO HONOUR EFCC AND COURT INVITATION

SEE WHY TOMPOLO REFUSED TO HONOUR EFCC AND COURT INVITATION

Tompolo

Former Niger Delta warlord, Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo has revealed why he is yet to honour the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged N34bn fraud, explaining that he does not want to be arraigned before a biased judge.
Tompolo, who accused the federal government of flouting court orders with impunity, said no one should be above the law, even as he promised to honour the invitation of the anti-graft agency, claiming to be innocent in the dealings he had with the Nigerian Maritime Safety Agency, NIMASA.
His media aide, Paul Bebenibo, who requested the EFCC to give the former militant commander more time to honour its summons, told TheCable in an interview that Tompolo, “will appear before the EFCC but the court case he has with them has to be settled before he will honour the invitation.
“Be that as it may, adherence to constitutionalism and the rule of law should not be on one part. There have been so many court pronouncements which the government and its agencies have refused to obey.
“The federal government should also respect the rule of law. Imagine the president saying that some persons should be kept in custody when the court asked that they should be freed. It doesn’t work. Tompolo will certainly appear because there is no misdeed on his part as far as the transactions with the federal government and NIMASA are concerned. As I speak to you now, his lawyers are working to sort that out.

“There is no misdeed on the part of Tompolo as far as this issue that he is having with the EFCC is concerned. He was actually the backbone of NIMASA in recovering the levies, taxes and so on, since he has interest in Global West Vessel Company, which does the job for NIMASA.
“So, if there is any financial issue that has got to do with NIMASA, Global West and Tompolo, he is very innocent. His records in ensuring that the public-private partnership which Global West had with NIMASA worked out for good are out known.
“So, one needs to be careful in order not to appear before just any court. Tompolo would not allow himself to be ridiculed, never. He would not appear before just any judge that would not be able to give effective judgment. Not a judge that would make pronouncement that would tie his hands, he won’t appear before such judge.”
While noting that his principal know nothing about the recent attack on oil installations in the Niger Delta, Bebenibo said, “Tompolo would not condescend so low to attack oil installations because he is being invited by the EFCC.
“It is a non-issue. Afterall, he is in court with the EFCC. He went to court two months after the EFCC froze his account without any court mandate. He challenged them in court and the EFCC invited him after that, so Tompolo is not afraid of appearing before EFCC. He will certainly appear but he should be given more time.”
On speculations that Tompolo has ran away from the country, Bebenibo said: “Flee to where? Tompolo has not left this country before. Since he accepted the amnesty offer of the late President Musa Yar’Adua, he has remained in this country. He cannot go through the backdoor.”

Dasukigate: Northern Lawmaker Recommends Amputation, Hanging For Corrupt Government Officials

#Dasukigate: Northern Lawmaker Recommends Amputation, Hanging For Corrupt Government Officials

Member, House of Representatives, Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency of Kaduna State, under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Yakubu Barde, has advocated for

the amputation of the hands of those who have looted public funds in the country.
He said those who stole millions of naira should have their hands amputated, while those who have looted in the billions of naira should be hanged to death.
Speaking yesterday at a press conference with Kaduna State chapter of correspondents chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Barde said some members of the lower chamber who are of like mind are already looking at the possibility of putting such a law in place to make it legal.
To this end, the lawmaker called for a special court rather than the conventional court to try and sentence looters of public monies to the prescribed capital punishment.

He said “I am a believer in the fact that people should be punished for whatever offence they commit. And I am also of the belief that punishment should also be segregated according to the offence. At least your punishment should be commensurate with what you have done.
“For me, if someone steals from N1 million to N100 million, they should cut his hands. There is nothing wrong with that, so that when we see him, we will know yes, he stole. And those that steal billions upward should be hanged and their property confiscated.
“You can imagine this issue of arms deal. If you knew this money was meant for the procurement of arms, weapons, (consider) if you have a brother in the Army, he is sent to the war front and because his weapons are archaic and he is killed. Do you now want to have sympathy for someone who knows that the money was meant for arms and he pocketed it? It is so painful, we have lost loved ones.
“If I am a judge and such a person is brought before me, I will confisticate his property and make sure he is killed also. Because he bears fault in the blood of the people killed in the war front.
“We are living in a very funny country where people steal N1,000 and they are put in jail for years. And where some people will steal billions and use that same billion to escape justice. That is not good enough.
“If you look at the quantum of corruption in the country today, we are just talking about Dasukigate, and look at the quantum of money and the number of people that are involved. You have not gone to the ministries yet. You have not even gone to the states and it is only ICPC and EFCC that are to do all these jobs.
“If we are fair to ourselves, the work is overwhelming. And you know, people will want to use the legal system to delay Justice, and that is what is happening today. So, why don’t we have dedicated courts to handle all these corruption cases, so that justice could be dispensed quickly?
“I am aware of former Governors who have cases with the EFCC and they have not gone to court for the past eight years. So, this does not encourage the young people. It rather encourages them to steal.
“So, I think we need to put our heads together because corruption, like hunger, does not know party, it does not know tribe of religion. We must as Nigerians take a very bold stand.”
