Economic Recess? Walmart will close 269 stores this year, affecting 16,000 workers

Economic Recess? Walmart will close 269 stores this year, affecting 16,000 workers

Walmart said it will close 269 stores in 2016, as the mega-retailer tries to revitalize its slumping finances.
One of the world’s leading retail company said the stores it plans to close are generally poor performers, and most are within 10 miles of another Walmart. 154 of the locations are in the United States, two-thirds of which are the smaller “Walmart Express” stores. Only 12 U.S. Walmart Supercenters will close, along with four Sam’s Club stores.

Of the 16,000 associates — or employees — to be affected, 10,000 will be in the United States. The company aims to place those associates in nearby Walmarts.

But when that’s not possible, Walmart said it will provide the laid-off associates with 60 days worth of pay as well as resume and interview skills training.

The retail sector struggled mightily, and shares of Walmart fell 30%, last year.

Walmart (WMT) had been reviewing the performance of its stores since October.

“Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” said Doug McMillon, Walmart’s CEO.

Yet Walmart says it will continue with its plans to open 300 new stores around the world later this year and 2017, including up to 60 new U.S. Supercenters and 10 new Sam’s Club stores
“We are committed to growing, but we are being disciplined about it,” McMillon said.

The closings represent just over 2% of the company’s 11,600 stores worldwide. They are generally smaller stores, making up 1% of the retailer’s overall square footage and sales.

Roughly half of the closing Walmarts overseas are in Brazil, and the rest are in Latin American countries.

Families Of Missing Dss Agents Petition Buhari, Demand Probe

Four months after seven Department of State Security (DSS) agents went killed at the Ikorodu area of Lagos, their family members have decried the agency’s silence on the issue.

The families have therefore appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to open a thorough investigation into the operatives’ murder.

They also want the President to compel the DSS to pay the salaries and other entitlements of the missing operatives to their wives, children and take full financial responsibility of their respective families.

“Let Nigerians ask why the DSS should keep silent on the sudden disappearance of their gallant officers who were on national assignment and refuse to even ask their families how they have been faring!

“Reason and responsibility demand that the DSS should cater for the temporary financial needs of the families until they are back,” they said in a letter to President Buhari.

Also petitioned in the letter titled: “A plea for a thorough investigation into the case of seven missing DSS operatives with Lagos Command,” were the Senate, the Inspector General of the Police (IGP) ,Solomon Arase and the Attorney -General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami.

Earlier this week, Metuh filed a suit through his lawyer before a Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking his immediate release from custody.

“Under the criminal justice act, you can arrest somebody and go to court to validate it. We have the order.”
In a related development, PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives recently ordered the EFCC to release of the party’s spokesman within 48 hours.

#BIAFRA : SEE WHAT AMBODE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THE AGITATION

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos has said that the best way to honour the heroes who lost their lives for Nigeria is to remain united.

The governor said this at the armed forces Remembrance Day celebration on Friday, January 15 at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. The celebration also coincided with the 50th anniversary of the first coup in Nigeria.
The governor said the issue of the agitation for an independent Biafra state championed by some people did not reflect the honour that Nigeria’s heroes deserved. Instead, the governor urged every Nigerian to embrace peace and unity.

On the issue of insurgency in the north east, the governor said the issue was not a threat anymore as the federal government was committed to making it a thing of the past.

“They are really not threats because they are being fully combated by the Federal Government and as you can see, we are making progress and we are having improvement on security of the country.

Nigeria is bigger than any individual and so we advise all Nigerians to know that the cohesion and unity of Nigeria is what is paramount to this government.”
