Charleston - Relatives of the nine black community leaders shot
down during a Bible study session confronted the shooting suspect on
Friday during his initial court hearing, and spoke of love.
"I
forgive you, my family forgives you," said Anthony Thompson. "We would
like you to take this opportunity to repent. ... Do that and you'll be
better off than you are right now."
Dylan Storm Roof, who faces
nine counts of murder, appeared by video from the county jail, looking
sombre in a striped jumpsuit and speaking only briefly in response to
the judge's questions.
Roof was ordered held on $1m bond on the weapons charge pending another hearing by another judge on the murder charges.
Felecia
Sanders survived the Wednesday night attack by pretending to be dead,
but lost her son Tywanza. She also spoke from the judge's courtroom,
where Roof's image appeared on a television screen.
"We welcomed
you on Wednesday night in our Bible study with open arms. You have
killed some of the most beautifulest (sic) people that I know. Every
fiber in my body hurts ... and I'll never be the same," Sanders told
Roof.
"Tywanza was my hero," Sanders said, but even she showed
some kindness as she confronted the man accused of killing her son. "As
we said in Bible study, we enjoyed you, but may God have mercy on you."
Roof looked sad and bowed his head slightly, but showed no other emotion as the relatives spoke.
Their
remarkable comments seemed in keeping with a spirit evident on the
streets of Charleston on Friday, where people built a memorial and
planned a vigil to repudiate whatever a gunman would hope to accomplish
by attacking the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the
nation's most important African-American sanctuaries.
Unite
"A
hateful person came to this community with some crazy idea he'd be able
to divide, but all he did was unite us and make us love each other even
more," Mayor Joseph P Riley jnr said as he described plans for the
evening vigil at a sports arena.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said the state will "absolutely" want the death penalty.
A
steady stream of people brought flowers and notes and shared sombre
thoughts at a growing memorial in front of the church, which President
Barack Obama called "a sacred place in the history of Charleston and in
the history of America".
"This was an act of racial terrorism and
must be treated as such," the Reverend Cornell William Brooks, president
of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said
on Friday in Charleston.
Roof, 21, had complained while getting
drunk on vodka recently that "blacks were taking over the world" and
that "someone needed to do something about it for the white race",
according to Joey Meek, who tipped the FBI when he saw his friend on
surveillance images.
Roof was arrested in North Carolina after an
alert motorist recognised him, and returned in shackles to a county jail
where he was being held next to the cell of Michael Slager, the white
former police officer charged with fatally shooting black motorist
Walter Scott.
The victims included Clementa Pinckney, a state
senator who doubled as the church's lead pastor, and eight others who
each played multiple roles in their communities and families: ministers
and coaches, teachers and a librarian, counselors and choir singers and
the church sexton who kept the historic building clean.
"The
suspect entered the group and was accepted by them, as they believed
that he wanted to join them in this Bible study," Charleston County
Coroner Rae Wilson said. Then, "he became very aggressive and violent."
The
Justice Department is investigating whether to file federal hate crime
charges, although Attorney General Loretta Lynch said state prosecutions
are sometimes more appropriate. Obama pointed to lax gun controls as a
factor, and complained that Washington politics have shut down efforts
to require universal background checks for gun purchases.
Most of the presidential candidates avoided mentioning guns at all.
On
his Facebook page, Roof displayed the flags of defeated white-ruled
regimes, posing with a Confederate flags plate on his car and wearing a
jacket with stitched-on flag patches from apartheid-era South Africa and
Rhodesia, which is now black-led Zimbabwe.
Roof was arrested in
February after workers said he appeared dressed entirely in black and
asking strange questions at the Columbiana shopping mall. He was charged
with possessing suboxone, a drug typically used to treat heroin
addiction. A trespassing charge was added after he showed up again in
April, prompting a three-year ban from the mall.
Spilling blood
inside the "Mother Emanuel" church, founded in 1816, evoked painful
memories nationwide that black churches have so often suffered from
racist violence.
White landowners burned the church in 1822 after
one of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organise a slave revolt.
Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War, then
rebuilt and grew stronger, eventually winning campaigns for voting
rights and political representation.

Obama to become first US president to visit Ethiopia
08:18 20/06/2015
Washington - US President Barack Obama will in late July become the first sitting American leader to visit Ethiopia and the headquarters of the African Union, the White House said on Friday.
Obama's trip to Addis Ababa will come directly after an already announced trip to Kenya, his first as president to his father's homeland, press secretary Josh Earnest announced.
Obama will meet with both the Ethiopian government and AU leaders, for talks on how to "accelerate economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions, and improve security".
The election of the US's first black president - and the first with an African parent - had raised hopes on the continent of closer ties, but Obama has been a cautious friend.
In August last year, the White House hosted a huge Washington summit of African leaders and the upcoming July trip is intended to build on progress towards closer economic ties.

Nigerians are good people
10:57 18/06/2015
Nigerians are good people but it is just that some of us need be pushed like a wheelbarrow to do the right thing.
A certain Senator was invited by President Mohammadu Buhari to Aso Villa last week for a dinner by 7.00 pm but the Senator got there by 7.15pm and was denied entrance due to lateness.
The Senator was whomever, angry that he was denied entrance but was happy that Nigeria now has a president that is serious-minded and pro-active and would therefore, tolerate no nonsense.
Giving credence to the above submission is also the fact that, some corrupt politicians who stole our money in the past have started refunding the money voluntarily at the dawn of the new administration which the know, won't tolerate nonsense.

Sex tips for normal bodies
13:21 18/06/2015
Make gravity work for you
Every woman should know how to drape her body to its best advantage. Plump girls know they look great draped horizontally across tumbled sheets. Skinny girls look wickedly sexy sitting back on their heels. You know your angle – so use it. Worried about your tummy? Lie on your back! Small boobs? Don’t lie on your back! And so on.
You don’t have to be beautiful to be erotic
Sexy is not to be confused with pretty. In fact, the opposite is often true. Now is not the time to worry about your hair or make-up. Sweaty, dishevelled, flushed, wicked, desperate… now that works.
Just because you’re not standing doesn’t make it less urgent or less sexy
I know so many women who are unhappy because they wish they were thin enough to wrap their legs around their partners and have crazy stand-up sex. Some things, like comedy and cooking work better standing. Sex isn’t one of them, so just let it go.
You don’t HAVE to face each other
If you’re feeling and looking a little worse for the wear in the morning, don’t fret. Just turn around. Spoon sex is great and you don’t have to worry about your wrinkles in the harsh light of day or your less than minty fresh breath.
On the chubby side?
Being overweight doesn’t mean that your sex life has to suffer. There ARE ways – and positions – that will help you achieve maximum pleasure.
Don’t believe me? Check out this full-bodied sex position that will leave you wanting to rip your clothes off in no time!
Try positions that focus on sensitivity rather than capability
Let’s be honest. Some positions are best suited for endurance freaks who probably missed their gruelling gym session and now, overwhelmed with guilt, want to punish themselves by performing moves that will make even Arnie feel a bit embarrassed.
Instead of attempting the bizarre and some downright stupid sex positions, try something slow and sensual that guarantees clitoral stimulation.

4 old wives’ tales that are actually true

Chicken soup is good for a cold
Unfortunately, there’s no real cure for the common cold, but chicken soup can make you feel better. How? Well, according to a study done back in 2000, it seems the soup held back the movement of neutrophils, which are the most common type of white blood cell to fight against infection. Dr. Stephen Rennard, who conducted the study using his wife’s homemade chicken soup recipe, theorised that this helps reduce upper respiratory cold symptoms.
While the exact ingredients responsible for this couldn’t be identified, there are thoughts that it could simply be a combination of the chicken and the vegetables. Well, they are both good for you. Or maybe it’s just the warm, healing feeling that drinking soup seems to give you? Either way, keep a chicken soup recipe handy for when you, or a loved one isn’t feeling too well just in case.
Fish is brain food
Eating just one kind of fish a week, grilled or baked, boosts your brain power according to this study. Apparently, any kind of fish, not just the oily ones, will do.
But the oily ones could help prevent blindness as you get older. The omega 3 fatty acids help stop tiny blood vessels from bleeding into the back of the eye. So while eating oily fish isn’t necessary going to keep your brain whirring, it won’t hurt either and could actually keep your eyes in tip top shape even when you’re old and grey.
Heartburn in pregnancy means you’re going to have a hairy baby
According to CBS News, this might seem like a tall tale, but was proven true by researchers at Johns Hopkins University who say there is actually a link between how severe the heartburn was and the hairiness of the newborn child.
While it is not necessarily a cause and effect relationship (it doesn’t mean it’s the actual hair on your baby’s head causing the heartburn), it does look as if the high levels of estrogen (which is what appears to be responsible for hair growth while the baby is developing) that increase in your third trimester is what makes you really feel the burn in your throat.
Vinegar for mosquito bites
This one might not be as well known as some of the others on this list, but it is just as true. Few things are as annoying as mosquito bites – especially if they’re in places that would be impolite to scratch in public. So when you notice one or two fresh bites, try applying a little vinegar (especially the apple cider variety) directly to it, or if you’re covered in them, take a hot bath to which you’ve added about 2 ½ cups of vinegar.
The acidity of the vinegar helps change the PH balance of the skin around the bite and makes it a lot less itchy, according to Huffington Post.

Chad war planes bomb Boko Haram after suicide attacks
16:25 18/06/2015
N'Djamena - Chad's military said Thursday it had carried out airstrikes on Boko Haram positions to avenge twin suicide bombings in Chad's capital that were blamed on the jihadists.
Citing the "cowardly and barbaric acts perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists", which killed 33 people in N'Djamena on Monday, the military said that it had "carried out reprisal airstrikes on the terrorists' positions in Nigerian territory" on Wednesday.
Six Boko Haram bases were destroyed in the air raids, which caused "considerable human and material losses", the military said in a statement.
Chad would continue its "merciless" pursuit of the insurgents "so that no drop of Chadian blood spilt goes unpunished," the statement added.
Monday's attacks on the police headquarters and a police academy in N'Djamena were the first in the capital of the west African country, which has taken a lead role in a regional offensive against Boko Haram.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks but Chad and its allies immediately blamed the Nigeria-based insurgents, who have carried out several attacks recently.
