Senate dismisses figures around wardrobe allowances
Augustine Osayande
08:55 18/06/2015
Abuja - President of the Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has denied reports lawmakers will next week receive N8,64 billion collectively as so-called wardrobe allowances.
He stated this during a visit by Chairman of Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission Engineer Elias Mbam and his team in Abuja.
Saraki said the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission was responsible for fixing of remunerations to public office holders.
He advised the media to be more accurate in their reporting.
He warned government agencies against not remitting Federal Government revenue to the Federation account to desist from such act as government will no longer condone such mismanagement act.
The Senate President said non-compliance by agencies of government has brought major setback in the processes of governance.
Saraki reiterated the support of the Senate in bringing back justice to any erring agency that indulged in diverting government revenue to illegal channels.
“Monetary revenue and allocation is a serious challenge to our economy.
Though, diversification of economy is very important but is not an overnight issue. We must block every leakage in government revenue.”
He said they made campaign promises to Nigerians and they must fulfill their pledges.
“It cannot be business as usual. We will do everything within our capacity to elevate the living standard of Nigerians,” Saraki said.
Chairman of Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Elias Mbam, said the agency had always enjoyed cordial relationships with the National Assembly. He called for the continued working relationship with the view to enhance their effectiveness.
Mbam also condemned the recent media report that exaggerated the wardrobe allowances of Senators and members of the House of Representatives.
He said wardrobe allowance was 25 percent of the basic salary, which was about N506 600 per legislator per annum.

Ramadan: Prices of fruits go up in Kano
08:55 18/06/2015
Kano - Barely 24 hours to the commencement of Ramadan fasting, prices of fruits, particularly orange have gone up in Kano.
A survey conducted in Sabon Gari, Yankaba and Yanlemo markets, all in Kano, revealed that fruits sellers have increased the prices of fruits.
According to the survey, a bag of orange which cost N6,500 a week ago is now being sold for N7,700.
The survey shows that a set of 10 oranges cost N200 as against N150 last week.
A medium size of the commodity which cost N20 last week now cost N30.
One of the fruits sellers at Sabon Gari Market, Malam Najib Mohammed, attributed the increase in the prices to sudden increase in the cost of transportation.
"Most of the truck drivers have travelled to their respective villages to see their families before the commencement of the Ramadan.
"The price increase may also be attributed to shortage in supply of fruits to the market in an attempt to create artificial scarcity to maximise profit when the Ramadan fast commences," he said.
Another fruit seller at Yankura Market, Malam Suleiman Abba said the fruit sellers had to increase the price to recover their money and make profit.
He explained that the prices of other fruits like Banana and Pineapple had also been increased slightly.
"Hopefully, the prices will come down, especially watermelon when the commodities begin to flood markets soon," he said.

APC slams calls for Buhari to retire
Augustine Osayande
08:55 18/06/2015
Abuja - The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign because of comments over his age.
APC described the call by the so-called PDP Media Watchdog as “a product of poor thinking and deliberate mischief.”
APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the group had quoted Buhari’s comments while he was in South Africa, of of context.
“What President Buhari was saying, which was lost on those who issued that jejune statement, is that only his love and passion for the country could have made him, at his age, to come out of retirement to seek the office of President, over 30 years after he presided over the affairs of the country,” said Mohammed.
He argued for 16 years, Nigerians gave the People’s Democratic Party the benefit of the doubt to move the country forward, but instead, the party put Nigeria in “reverse gear at a high speed, spinning it towards a doomsday that was only averted when Nigerians showed the PDP the red card.”
“This is what necessitated President Buhari to continuously seek the country's highest political office, so he can help put the country on a forward march again. Nothing else matters, not for him the excitement of an office he previously held and the quest for personal accomplishment,”
Mohammed said.
Mohammed said if the country had been well-managed, Buhari would not, at 72, travelling the world seeking solutions to Nigeria's problems.
He said within three weeks of his inauguration, Buhari had succeeded in returning Nigeria to the comity of nations, to such an extent that world leaders were eager to engage him on how to assist the country in key areas, including security and the fight against corruption.
“Within three weeks of President Buhari's inauguration, he had done what the PDP government could not do in six years.”

Babayaro wants NFF to strip Enyeama of captaincy
15:12 17/06/2015
Lagos - Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro wants the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to strip Vincent Enyeama of his role as captain of the Super Eagles over what he terms as indiscipline.
The Lille shot stopper allegedly tore a letter of query served to him by the NFF over his criticism of Kaduna State, venue of their Saturday game against Chad which they won 2-0.
Enyeama who has been captaining the Eagles since Yobo left the national team after the 2014 world cup, complained of security and the weather in the northern state prior to the game, and also openly criticized the NFF for moving the game to Kaduna as oppose to Abuja, Uyo and Calabar where the Eagles have been playing their games lately.
Babayaro in his opinion said if it's true Enyeama tore the query then he should be strip off the captaincy as that singular act is not befitting for a team captain.
"The NFF should take the captaincy from him if it's true he tore the query, as a captain he needs to set good precedence for the young ones and that act is unacceptable as a captain," he told News24.
"No man is bigger than the team not even the captain, England treated John Terry in the same way when he crossed the line, so Enyeama shouldn't be an exception.
