Finnish mom gets life for killing five newborns
09:01 16/06/2015
Helsinki - A Finnish court on Monday sentenced a 36-year-old woman to life in prison for killing her five newborns between 2005 and 2013 and hiding them in a freezer.
The Oulu district court in western Finland found the woman guilty of five counts of murder and five counts of disturbing the peace of the dead for failing to give the babies proper burials.
"The homicides took place by leaving the newborns without care and warmth... Clearly this measure... caused particular agony to the babies," the court said in its ruling.
The woman, who has a 14-year-old son, had pleaded innocent and said the babies were all stillborn.
But the court ruled on the basis of dental examinations that at least some of the babies had lived for up to four days before dying in a bucket where she had left them.
The horrific crimes were discovered in June 2014 when neighbours began to complain of a bad smell in the apartment building where a new couple had moved in.
It was soon discovered that the woman had dumped the babies' bodies in garbage bags in the building's cellar.
Previously she had managed to hide the bodies by keeping them in a freezer in her old apartment but there was no longer room for a freezer in the new apartment.
Court documents showed she had hid her pregnancies under loose clothing, and gave birth to the babies at home without anyone's knowledge.
District prosecutor Sari Kemppainen told AFP that all of the babies were born full-term or nearly full-term.
The fathers of the first two babies were not identified, but in 2010 she married a man and got pregnant a third time. She later told him she had suffered a miscarriage.
The husband went on to father two more babies, but was unaware of his wife's pregnancies or crimes. He petitioned for divorce immediately after the bodies were discovered.
When questioned by police, the mother was unable to explain why she had opted to keep, and not bury, the bodies.
A life sentence in Finland usually amounts to about 12 years behind bars.

APC blasts PDP for demanding Ambode’s asset declaration
13:14 16/06/2015
Lagos - The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday lambasted the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for issuing a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State to publicly declare his assets or be disgraced, reports Thisday.
The APC, through the Publicity Secretary of the party in the Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe, described the demand of the PDP as an uncoordinated thought.
Igbokwe noted that the constitution did not require the governor to declare his assets publicly.
He dismissed the Lagos PDP as a group of ill-informed jokers, who are being dealt a big blow by their present shambolic state.

Foreign ISIS fighters killed in air strike
08:00 16/06/2015
Mosul - The forensic medicine authority in the Islamic State-controlled northern Iraqi city of Mosul has received the bodies of 122 Islamic State insurgents in 24 hours, an official with the authority said on Monday.
Most of the dead were fighters of various nationalities killed in an air strike conducted south of Mosul by the US-led alliance against the extremist group, the official told dpa on condition of anonymity.
The official added that the Islamic State had told the forensic authority in Mosul not to record or to reveal the number of dead.
Dozens of Islamic State militants injured during offensives against the extremist group are currently receiving treatment at Mosul hospitals, the official said.
Islamic State captured Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, last summer at the start of a lightning offensive that saw it seize much of Sunni Arab northern and western Iraq.
Kurdish and Iraqi security forces backed by US-led air strikes have pushed the jihadists back from some of the areas they captured, but in May the group seized the western provincial capital of Ramadi.

Russian fans start fund-raising to sack Capello
15:16 16/06/2015
Moscow - A group of Russian football lovers has started a fund-rising campaign aimed at collecting the sum of 21.4 million euros ($24.2 million) needed to buy the national squad manager Fabio Capello out of his contract.
"Dear friends! We believe that everyone who is not indifferent to the fate of Russia's football has been bitterly disappointed with our national side's recent performances," said the statement at the main page of the www.fabiogohome.betfoot.ru site.
"Recent public surveys showed that the vast majority of the country's football lovers want Capello to step down.
"But to do that the Russia's Football Union (RFU) needs to pay Capello a serious penalty for cancellation of his contract - 21.4 million euros."
Those behind the site wrote that they were simple football fans and had no relation to any official organisations.
Capello has again come in for heavy criticism following Sunday's 1-0 home defeat in Euro 2016 qualifying campaign at the hands of their group leaders Austria.
"It's high time to start looking for those millions," Sport Express headlined Monday in reference to the huge sum needed to buy Capello out of his contract.
Last year Capello, who is reportedly the world's highest paid coach, signed a lucrative new contract to stay in the job through to the end of the 2018 World Cup, which Russia will host.
But after Russia were knocked out at the group stage of last year's World Cup in Brazil without winning a game, the 68-year-old coach was widely criticised, and only the backing of the country's Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko prevented the former England manager from losing his job.
Meanwhile, in the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign Russia have just two wins to their name -- a 4-0 home victory over Liechtenstein last September before being awarded a 3-0 victory from the abandoned clash against Montenegro in Podgorica in March.
They have been held at home by minnows Moldova and suffered two defeats to Austria.
Russia are third in the group with four matches to go, meaning their place at Euro 2016 is far from secure as only the best third-placed side from the nine groups qualifying along with the top two sides from each section, and the rest going into play-offs.
Russia's next qualifier is a potentially decisive fixture at home to Sweden in September.

NFF hammer may fall on Enyeama
14:13 16/06/2015
Abuja - Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama could face sanctions after questioning the suitability of the venue for his country's last Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Enyeama, who plays for French side Lille, suggested Kaduna city, in northern Nigeria, should not have been chosen to host Saturday's match against Chad on security grounds.
The Super Eagles won the match 2-0. Enyeama skippered the side in his 101st appearance for his country -- making him Nigeria's most capped international.
The comments reportedly did not go down well with the new Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who said he would not attend the match until football federation chiefs stepped in.
Boko Haram Islamists, who believe football is a Western ploy to distract Muslims from their religion, have attacked cities in northern Nigeria, including in Kaduna.
But the violence is largely concentrated in the northeast.
Enyeama, 32, later apologised but Nigeria Football Federation officials said they were looking at punishing the player after manager Stephen Keshi criticised the remarks.
"What Vincent did was unacceptable and he cannot go unpunished for this," added Nigeria's former midfielder Garba Lawal, who is now general manager at Kaduna United FC.
