Striking judicial workers ask government to respect court order

2015-01-13 11:23
Abuja - The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) said on Monday that it would call off its ongoing strike if the government complied with the court judgment granting financial autonomy to states’ judiciary.
Its National President, Comrade Marwan Adamu, said this at the emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union in Abuja.

NEC in session after a thorough review of the journey so far, in the course of the struggles for financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary hereby resolve that the ongoing strike be sustained until all stakeholders comply with judgment of the Federal High Court of the 13th January, 2014 and the memorandum of understanding dated 12th day of January 2014. ''

Adamu, however, called on the Edo government to pay the July 2014 salary it owed the state judiciary workers.

"NEC in session frowns at the continuous refusal of the Edo government to pay the July salary owed the state Judiciary workers,’’ he said.

According to him, the union frowns at the action of some state governors and highly placed individuals trying to frustrate the implementation of the judgment by the court.

He expressed appreciation at the cooperation received from all members of the union and urged for sustenance.

JUSUN embarked on the strike following the non-implementation of the January 13, 2014 judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court had ordered the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) to make deductions of the amount standing to the credit of states’ judiciary in the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

The court directed the AGF to remit to the National Judicial Council which will then disburse same to the various heads of courts.

UN wants release of AU-led South Sudan inquiry

2015-01-13 11:24
New York - A senior UN rights official voiced concern on Monday that an African Union commission of inquiry report on the bloodshed in South Sudan will not come up for discussion at an upcoming AU summit.
The UN Assistant Secretary General Ivan Simonovic said shelving the key report on South Sudan's year-long war would be a "very disturbing development" at a time when the Security Council is weighing sanctions.

"We are very concerned about that possibility," Simonovic told reporters.
"We think it's essential to have that report submitted during the African Union summit, but also to make that report public afterwards," he said.

Worsening conflict
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will attend the 29-31 January AU summit in Addis Ababa that is expected to touch on the worsening conflict in South Sudan.

Simonovic is due to travel to South Sudan for a fact-finding mission after the summit, with stops planned in Juba, Malakal and Bentiu.

The UN rights investigators last week released the first detailed account of two attacks in South Sudan last year during which that war crimes may have been committed.

The United States told the Security Council in November that it was ready to present a draft resolution on imposing sanctions on leaders who are thwarting peace efforts in South Sudan, but there has been no movement since.

Fighting broke out in South Sudan, the world's youngest nation, in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his sacked deputy Riek Machar of attempting a coup.

The fighting in Juba set off a cycle of retaliatory massacres across the country, pushing it to the brink of famine. Both government forces and rebels loyal to Machar continue to fight, despite numerous ceasefire deals.

West facing 'payback' for colonialism - China paper

2015-01-13 12:26
Beijing - The religious and cultural tensions the West faces are "payback" for slavery and colonialism, a Chinese state-run newspaper said on Tuesday in the wake of the Islamist attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine.
The editorial in the Global Times newspaper - which often takes a nationalistic tone - dismissed the weekend's huge marches in Paris and elsewhere as "painkillers" that cannot halt the intensifying "clash of civilisations".

The article comes amid a global show of support for the satirical French weekly, whose Paris office last week was stormed by Islamist gunmen in an attack that left 12 people dead.

"Voices say that what Western developed societies have gone through is payback as it is their historical acts of slavery and colonialism which led to their current demographic structures," the newspaper, which is close to China's ruling Communist Party, said.

"The immigrant issue has bred ultra-extremist right-wingers in Europe, making conflicts largely insolvable," it continued.

Difficult position
About 1.5 million people took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to mourn the victims of the magazine attack and support free speech, including several world leaders.

But the Global Times contended that the rallies "can hardly produce significant results".
"Despite its impressive scale, the vast solidarity march in Paris on Sunday looked like feeding a seriously ailing person with painkillers," the paper wrote.

"When calm is restored, if the magazine holds on to its stance on Islam, it will put the French government in a difficult position and it will become a symbol of a clash of civilisations in Europe," it continued.

Beijing strictly controls its own domestic media and has recently launched one of its biggest campaigns to silence critics in years, detaining and jailing dozens of human rights activists, lawyers, academics and journalists.

China has also been engaged in a heavy handed crackdown on unrest in the far-western, mainly Muslim, Xinjiang region which has been the scene of bloody clashes that authorities classify as religiously-inspired terrorism.

In the days since the Paris attack, Beijing has both condemned terrorism and argued that Charlie Hebdo's provocative cartoons were an invitation to violence.

In a commentary on Monday, the official Xinhua news agency said that the incidents in Paris "should not be simplified as attacks on press freedom, for even the freedom itself has its limits, which does not include insulting, sneering or taunting other people's religion or beliefs".

"It is high time for the Western world to review the root causes of terrorism, as well as the limitation of press freedom, to avoid more violence in the future," Xinhua said.

2015-01-13 12:29 Duste - Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State on Monday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, as an incorruptible and honest leader.

Lamido stated this while addressing supporters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at a rally in Maigatari.

“I agreed like every other person that Buhari is an incorruptible, honest, clean and patriotic Nigerian.

“My concern has always been defectors who our party, PDP, had made ministers, governors, speakers and members of the National Assembly and left us after benefiting so much,” he said.

Lamido urged the electorate in the area to vote for PDP candidates in the coming elections.

According to him, the party’s governorship candidate in the state Aminu Ibrahim, and his running mate, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, will continue from wherever I will stopped and will not betray the trust, if elected.
